Portable Bomb Detection Systems for Fast, Safe Explosive Threat Response

First responder organisations, whether bomb squads or border control, face life-threatening scenarios where split-second decisions save lives. That’s why portable EOD equipment is essential: it provides teams with clear, real-time images to detect, evaluate, and neutralise explosive threats safely and effectively.

EOD x-ray equipment is used extensively for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD), and Public Safety Bomb Disposal (PSBD) to combat terrorist activities and security breaches at borders, checkpoints, high-security areas, or crowded places.

These usage cases have become a major driving factor in developments within the global explosive ordnance disposal equipment market.

Designed to improve detection, identification, evaluation, rendering safe, recovering, and disposing of explosive ordnance, EOD equipment boosts the safety of both bomb squad task force personnel and the public at large.

The Roots of Bomb Disposal

The first-ever professional civilian bomb squad was created by Major Sir Vivian Dering Majendie, one of the first bomb disposal experts.

He was the Chief Inspector of Explosives in the Royal Artillery. On October 2nd, 1874, he inspected a barge carrying six barrels of petroleum and five tonnes of gunpowder, which unfortunately detonated and led to the destruction of Macclesfield Bridge and animal cages at nearby London Zoo.  The barge crew was also killed in the explosion.

This event laid the foundation for modern bomb disposal and marked the beginning of dedicated explosive response protocols.

Today, thanks to cutting-edge technology and decades of innovation, EOD teams can remotely detect, evaluate, and neutralise explosive threats with far greater safety and precision.

Why Your EOD Team Can’t Operate Safely Without X-Ray Technology

When you’re facing a potential explosive device, every decision could mean the difference between life and death. X-ray technology plays an absolutely essential part in keeping your team safe and your missions successful for a few reasons:

You Can See Inside Without Risk: Physical examination of suspicious devices puts your personnel in immediate danger. X-ray imaging allows your team to evaluate internal components, wiring, and potential threats from a safe distance. This eliminates the need for manual inspection.

You Can Identify What You’re Dealing With: Not all suspicious packages contain the same threats. Your X-ray system helps you distinguish between explosive materials, timing devices, trigger mechanisms, and harmless contents. This gives you the intelligence needed to choose the right response protocol.

You Can Confidently Plan Your Next Steps: Once you understand a device’s internal structure, you can develop the safest render-safe procedure. Whether you’re dealing with a simple timer mechanism or a complex multi-stage device, X-ray imaging provides the detailed intelligence your team needs for successful disposal.

You Can Protect the Evidence Chain: High-resolution images preserve the exact construction details, component placement, and assembly methods of the package you’re analysing – information that investigators need to track down bomb makers and prevent future attacks.

Keep Your Team at Safe Distances: The greatest advantage of X-ray technology is maintaining a standoff distance whilst gathering intelligence.

How EOD Equipment Has Developed

Examples of modern-day EOD x-ray equipment include:

  • ThreatScan LS1
    • Large Format: 600mm x 460mm imaging area.
    • Ideal for: Vehicles, luggage, large suspicious packages.
    • Portable: Lightweight yet rugged.
  • ThreatScan LS3
    • Compact Size: 305mm x 256mm.
    • Best for: Confined spaces or rapid deployment.
    • High Resolution: Sub-millimetre imaging.
  • ThreatScan LSC
    • Combined System: Flexible imaging modes.
    • Multi-threat environments: Urban, tactical, transport hubs.

These systems can penetrate up to 50 mm of steel at 150 kV. This produces high-quality, sub-millimetre resolution images ideal for identifying power sources, timers, and other IED components.

As well as rapid deployment, the detector and x-ray source produce high-quality, real-time x-ray images that enable rapid and accurate decision-making. Portable X-ray systems provide the ability to zoom in and identify the small components used in an IED circuit.

Other requirements for EOD x-ray equipment are a range of sophisticated image processing functions. These include materials discrimination, pan, zoom, DeepFocus™, 3D Emboss, measurement, annotation, image subtraction, image addition and image stitching.

These are based on high-quality images and an uncluttered screen, which is easy to use and interpret even in tense, high-pressure environments. The x-ray source and detector can be controlled and analysed remotely, minimising the danger to active personnel whilst allowing them to quickly identify threat and non-threat items.
