3DX-RAY unveils new generation of FlatScan with 3D imaging

FlatScan2 improves accuracy, reliability, safety and speed of portable x-ray inspection

Loughborough, UK – 15 January 2013 – 3DX-RAY has today launched FlatScan2, the latest product in its FlatScan family of portable x-ray inspection devices. Building on FlatScan, the world’s first linescan portable security screening system originally developed by 3DX-RAY, FlatScan2 is the first portable x-ray device with the potential for 3D imaging capabilities for improved inspection.

The 3D imaging capability, unique to FlatScan2, delivers significant benefits for security services, by making an inherently ‘unnatural’ x-ray appear more ‘natural’, enabling the operator to correctly interpret a set of items as either benign or as a threat. In high pressure IED and EOD scenarios where x-ray images need to be analysed as quickly, reliably and safely as possible FlatScan2’s 3D imaging delivers improved detection rates, reduced time to decision and much easier usability for security operatives.

Added to this new 3D capability FlatScan2 also incorporates further hardware and functionality improvements ‘under the hood’ compared to previous generations. Imaging resolution has been improved by 50% compared to the original FlatScan – giving FlatScan2 comparable image quality approaching that of amorphous silicon-based detectors, but without the price premium associated with such ‘full field’ systems.

FlatScan2 also delivers class-leading penetration through up to 40mm of steel, enabling more threats to be detected even when hidden behind thick metal barriers or containers.

The wireless capabilities have also been enhanced, with the range of FlatScan2 extended to 120m, allowing operatives to inspect potential threats like IEDs from greater distances and therefore reducing the potential risk.

Vince Deery, Sales Director at 3DX-RAY, said: “Since developing the original concept our FlatScan product has matured and we have great confidence in our technology. As always the challenge for us is to help security operatives determine from the x-ray image if an item is a threat quickly, reliably and safely. This can be quite a daunting task, particularly in high-pressure situations. As a result the 3D capability and major upgrades to image quality have been developed to ensure that FlatScan2 delivers the best performance in terms of accuracy, speed and safety.”

3DX-RAY will be showing the product on stand 616C in Hall 2 during the Intersec Dubai exhibition from Tuesday, January 15. 3DX-RAY spokespeople will be available to discuss FlatScan2 as well as the company’s wide range of technologies and products, including the SVXi vehicle inspection system.
