FlatScan-TPXi x-rays national treasures
17 June 2011
3DX-Ray Ltd’s portable x-ray system is helping the conservation team at Knole in Sevenoaks to discover more about the construction, materials and condition of its treasures.
This project is the first time that x-rays have been taken of the upholstered furniture in its customary environment.
The x-ray images obtained show details of the furniture’s construction, the tacks used, the presence of tarnished and degraded threads, the layers of upholstery and, of course, the tunnels and damage caused by woodworm.
Images were also taken of a framed painting depicting an Elizabethan Lady and of a Nubian statue.
The results have astounded the conservation team at Knole. House and Collections manager Helen Fawbert said: “It is very exciting; we want to use it again, as there is real potential to find out a lot more about the collections we have here at Knole.”
