New non-destructive x-ray technique for measuring distributions of one or multiple wash coats, soot ash, and substrate damage

3DX-RAY has developed new non-destructive tools to aid scientists and engineers involved in the design, development and production of catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters.

Diesel Particulate filters must achieve key requirements of high filtration efficiency, low filtration backpressure, and fast regeneration. Design engineers must maximize the efficacy of PGM catalysts by balancing the high loading needed for performance with low cost

There is a need to tailor, closely, catalysts to individual vehicles, and control soot build up, ash build up and possible substrate overheating during regeneration. The 3DX-RAY MDXi family of systems offers:

  • Non-destructive method of quality control and R&D analysis
  • Ability to image and analyze internal features through the can
  • Better utilization of catalyst for cost reduction, performance improvement
  • Measure multiple wash coat distributions, overlaps and voids
  • Measure soot distribution in used and regenerated filters
  • Measure ash build up
  • Measure substrate damage with no visible external indications
  • Optional 3D computerized tomography package available
